[UPDATE] “Decent quality, fair price, in the UK / Euro high street” and “Why do t-shirt collars come out of the wash bent at the front?”
I finished my shopping trip in London, and I’ve had time to wear and wash the t-shirts to check how the collars reacted.I came back with:Cos (Regent Street):Round-neck t-shirts, after all the recommendations on here to try Cos, I was tempted by these basic but smart shirts. Perhaps I could have gone a size smaller, but it’s not exactly baggy.Ombre merino-wool jumper, just love the weirdness of the colour change, it’s much more subtle in the flesh.Paul Smith (Bicester Village Outlet):Tacky zebra t-shirt – having turned 40, I’m reluctantly and slowly cutting down on garish t-shirts, but this was cute so I was tempted. Also interested to see if the quality lives up to the price, I paid around 40% off list.Polo Ralph Lauren (Bicester Village Outlet):Custom slim fit long-sleeved t-shirt – I don’t need or want the formality of collars, but these felt like good quality fabric (however see below), and will be useful for winter nights out, and as defence against office air-conditioning.Ted Baker (Bicester Village Outlet):”Stephan” funnel-neck jacket – a really unusual material choice for me, 69% polyester, 29% viscose, 5% elastane. Looks great on, and the cut, material, and finishing are seriously immaculate.”Maso” t-shirt – really nice fabric and fit, feels like quality.”Waymil” t-shirt – I bought navy not white, but couldn’t find a photo of the navy. Again feels bulletproof. In many ways, Ted Baker was a bit of a surprise for me. I don’t buy the top brands, but I don’t see how quality can get much better than this. Hoping it holds up after wear and washing.Top Shop (West End):Stretch slim jeans, having returned my Levi 511s for falling off after two hours, I found these and the Uniqlos to be the best fits around. Bought them tight (28), but after a couple of hours they eased up, and I don’t have that annoying saggy bit from the bottom of my arse to the back of my knees.Uniqlo (West End):Dry crew neck t-shirts – actually fit better than the Supima, which were long enough to look like some kind of mini-dress. Really cheap, so hard to believe the quality could be any good, but read on…Full-zip hoodies for winter lounging about, to replace a Fila hoodie that must have been fifteen years old.Slim selvedge jeans because they fit me well and were no more than 2% elastane (anything more feels like it will last five minutes). Not bothered about the selvedge thing, not going to baby them, wore them all week and just washed them.T-shirt washing results, cold, air-dry:Cos: Collars look okay, slight bending but if you don’t look for it you won’t notice it. Not sure how the shirt held its shape, but am attempting to dry in shape. Also seems to have more creases than most t-shirts out of the wash – this isn’t a criticism, it just means I’ll need to find the iron. Decent value too, Cos is generally not cheap, but these shirts were 12 pounds each, not much at all.Paul Smith: Came out of the wash with collars virtually unstretched (if Cos was slight, this is uber-slight), and fabric in nearly perfect shape. A decent result, but for the price, perhaps a tad underwhelming. I wouldn’t rush to buy more of their stuff, except if the design was super-cool (I thought these were…).Polo Ralph Lauren: Oh dear. One wash and the long-sleeved t-shirt has become somewhat wider from the chest to the bottom, and possibly a tad shorter. How disappointing. I’ve called them, and I’m sure they’ll make it good, but I think I’ll be wanting a refund not a replacement.Reiss: Another disappointment. Collars noticeably stretched, not to the Primark 45-degree level, but clearly not flat. Expected more based on past experience of a good Reiss t-shirt, and their reputation. I’ve emailed their customer service, 20 pounds a shirt is too expensive to ignore.Ted Baker: The best of the bunch. No discernible collar stretch or mis-shape of the fabric. Apparently they’ve kept their quality up, I own another shirt of theirs which must be over ten years old, and it’s faded, but 90% in shape. I’ll happily buy more from them.Uniqlo: I’m happy MFA convinced me to give them another chance after Primark-esque collar and shape issues in the past. Came out with collar and shape looking very good. Impressive, and if their longevity is good too, I’ll be stocking up.Main takeaways:Every brand has variable quality. This is probably due to the layers of abstraction between the brand name and the factories. Makes things tiring for the consumer. Reiss WTF?Always try on every pair of jeans. Two pairs of the same style and size may differ considerably in fit and feel. I fell into this trap twice, when assistants at Top Shop and Uniqlo told me that if one colour fitted me, I could pick up another in the same style and size and be sure it would fit. And the differences can be big, it’s not like you need to be Derek Zoolander to notice. How can I be the only one with all these problems after washing? Or does everyone get them and live with it? I wash cold, in a bog-standard LG 7kg machine which I try not to overfill (although I’m not sure that would affect the results anyway). So thanks to all who chipped in useful advice. Hope this helps others with the same first-world problems. 🙂

Anyone have any info on this brand? It’s a vintage motorcycle jacket but that’s all I know.

Capsule Wardrobe Examination

Capsule Wardrobe Examination
TLDR; I tried creating and using a capsule wardrobe for the month of September. Here’s a compilation of my fits.I was inspired by the capsule wardrobe challenge earlier this year and wanted to try it out for September. When I first discovered MFA, my original intent was to build a versatile capsule wardrobe. This was my attempt to do so, using what I’ve learned so far from MFA.My observations from this challenge, in no particular order:When selecting pieces for a capsule wardrobe, be sure you love them because you’ll be stuck with them for a very long time.Limiting myself to a capsule wardrobe helped me determine which pieces I love and which ones I’m ‘meh’ about.I tried to not duplicate a fit for the entire challenge. As long as either the top, bottom, or shoes was different, I considered it a unique fit.Limiting my pieces forced me to experiment and uses pieces together that I would be reluctant to.Pieces that look good together while hanging in the closet may not necessarily work when actually worn in a fit.I felt the colorful shirts were the weakest pieces for the wardrobe, as they didn’t seem to work that well with the monochrome palette.Having fewer pieces helped me focus more on what pieces I should consider for my wardrobe. My fit upvotes for the capsule wardrobe month were noticeably lower than the previous month.Although the bags and accessories don’t appear in many fit pics, I actually used them quite often. I just didn’t think they would look good for the fit pic.I needed more pieces that could be used for work. I had too many casual pieces. The capsule wardrobe should match your lifestyle. This is a good way for me to cull my wardrobe and help refine my style. I can start adding in pieces from my full wardrobe to the capsule wardrobe, to figure out what works and what doesn’t.Were you content with the items you selected? At first I was, but then started wishing I had selected different pieces. What would you have changed?Remove the blazer, add a few more tees, and some different short sleeves. Is there anything you didn’t wear or wore seldom?I tried to wear the blazer once, but couldn’t get it to work. The plaid longsleeves and harrington jacket were only worn once. The cardigan and sweaters were seldom worn. What are your favorite fits from your capsule challenge?9.2.17 / 9.6.17 / 9.19.17 / 9.22.17 / 9.24.17Will you continue the capsule or go back to your full wardrobe?A mix. I’m planning to remove pieces from the capsule that I didn’t like, then slowly start adding pieces from my full wardrobe. How did the process change the way you look at your wardrobe, if at all?I’m discovering what pieces work together and which ones don’t. Also discovering which pieces I gravitate to more, which ones I seldom use, and which ones I wish I had selected for the capsule. How do you see your style going forward?I’m still trying to find settle into a style, but I really enjoy the monochrome palette of black, white, and gray. Moving forward, I think I’ll try to focus on building my style and wardrobe around the monochrome palette, with the occasional splash of color.Overall, did you enjoy the challenge and would you do it again?Overall it was fun, but I don’t know if I would do it again in the near future. Near the middle-end of the challenge, I started feeling the desire to wear different pieces. EDIT: I’m actually tempted to try this again maybe a little sooner, as I feel it’s a great way to help me refine my style.

Your Unpopular Opinion on Men’s Fashion
I’m a regular over at r/NFL and we will commonly do an “unpopular opinion” thread regarding teams and whatnot so I thought a similar idea might be fun here.So r/MFA, what’s your unpopular opinion?EDIT: I should add that downvotes are obviously discouraged in a thread like this, but let’s be real, people will downvote anyway, so just mind that the real unpopular opinions will probably end up at the bottom.
