In Praise of Shawl Collar Cardigans

In Praise of Shawl Collar Cardigans
I was thinking of posting this regardless and then I realized that Dieworkwear just posted a very good guide to the current season’s options for shawl collar cardigans.I should note: I definitely went through a heavy SCC phase and though I’ve begun thinning the herd, I still have at least four (cashmere, wool, cotton, and linen, respectively) because I love the style so much. For me, it’s partially because the collar gives the cardigan extra eye appeal that a plain cardigan simply doesn’t have. Sometimes, instead of a sport coat, I’d wear a SCC instead, pairing it with wool or thick knit ties to help complement the knit of the sweater. Moreover, for colder months, a proper SCC, like Dieworkwear writes, is “chunky enough that they function like outerwear, but feel soft and cozy enough for wearing around the house.” (I spend a lot of time working from home so I appreciate the last part).I’m guessing, within the menswear retail world, we hit Peak SCC a few years back but while more mainstream fashion brands have begun to dial things down, to me, the style is timeless. As such, more traditional menswear outlets will always carry them regardless of how the fast fashion world reacts. For sheer selection, Ralph Lauren always seems to have a diversity of SCC styles and though pricey, their RRL options are killer. That $1400 “wool-blend ranch SCC” looks incredible. But uh, yeah. $1400. I mean, that’s $200 more than O’Connell’s 12-ply cashmere SCC (that’s…a lot of ply!).For a long time, I lusted after an Inverallen 6A, with its thick, cable knit but earlier this year, I was lucky to catch a used Epaulet Coastline Cardigan and especially with its open weave, it’s more practical for my clime.Dieworkwear recommended, as an affordable option, these A&F “cozy shawl cardigans”. While it has the look right, especially the marled gray one, I’d have some concerns about the cotton-blend being as good as wool for warmth reasons.I’m also ambivalent about J.Crew’s new felted merino wool SCCs. I like the felted look but not a fan of the buttoned flapped patch pockets. Their “rugged merino wool SCC” is better to me though I don’t quite get how “rugged” and “merino” work together.Visually, I like this Brooks Brothers color-block SCC in merino. It looks subtly collegiate without going Full Danny. BB also has this cool, cotton “geometric SCC” on sale right now. Also on sale is Ralph Lauren’s alpaca-blend SCC.Lastly, technically a knit blazer vs. a shawl cardigan but man, I love these Inis Meian linen pub jackets.

First time trying Jeans since losing 70lbs!. Looking for advice on fit and color.

First time trying Jeans since losing 70lbs!. Looking for advice on fit and color.
In the past year i’ve gone from the 250’s to 182lbs. While trying on jeans today the manager at American Eagle convinced me to go down to 34 slim fit from the 36 slim straight I was trying. This is my first time wearing slim fit jeans to my actual size, and they feel tight around the calve area. I figure this is due to not being used good fitting pants, and he convinced me you get used to it after a while. I’m also happy because i’m still losing weight, and so I can make size 34’s fit a lot longer than 36’s.Picture of the Jeans fitMy concern though is that i’m going to start lifting weights soon, and I don’t want them to become any tighter than they already are from muscle gains. I want to keep losing fat and become lean, so i’m unsure the fat loss over time will balance out the muscle gain. I want to make the purchase online, but i’m stuck on whether I should switch to a slim straight fit which will definitely be a less flattering fit. Here’s a picture of my body currently with my goal physique (NSFW guy in underwear)My second question is more simple and is about color and length. I’m stuck between the color in the original picture above which is This One or the one in these pictures which is This OneI’m also stuck between the length. The jeans in the original picture are 30 inches long, but the manager at American Eagle said that 32 would be a better fit. Picture of the 32 lengthsKeep in mind that I also like to cuff, but the 32’s look obsessively long (although I don’t know much about style)

Help a college student dress a bit better

Help a college student dress a bit better
Hey guys,I’ve been browsing this sub for a while now looking for inspiration to hone my college wardrobe. So far I think I have a good idea on what is recommended such as basic tees, dark/light washed jeans, a few simple sweaters etc. The problem is that I feel like I am wearing leisurewear more often than not and simply because it’s light enough to handle the daily heat where I live in SoCal. I have a few pair of jeans but only limit to wearing them at night when the weather has cooled down. Do you guys have any recommendations on what bottoms specifically, I could pick up so that I don’t look like I just rolled out of bed everyday yet also is airy enough to keep the sweat off my legs? I was thinking of looking at cotton or twill chinos. I also skate around campus and workout daily meaning I have a somewhat big thigh to calf ratio so if there are any recommendations to chinos that aren’t skin tight it would be much appreciated. Thanks! For reference, I am a 28×29 502 on Levis.
