How to Ask r/mfa a Question
IntroductionI embark on this journey knowing full well it is a Sisyphean task. The Cruel irony is those who would benefit most from this guide are the ones least-likely to read it. Hopefully one lost soul will stumble upon this guide and become enlightened, blessing the sub with a detailed, specific question that many will eagerly clamor to answer. In reality I just felt bad for /u/halfthegoldtreasure & others answering the same generic questions over and over.Step 1. Read the wikiStep 2. Read the FUCKING wikiStep 3. Outline a Budget“Affordable” is a purely subjective word. “Affordable” white sneakers could be $425 CP’s to some (but realistically, not many. Maybe these $250 Koi’s are a better example) or these $80 Stan Smiths. Be as specific as you can with your budget.Step 4. Add PicturesPictures are almost essential in ensuring you receive a detailed and helpful reply. To be clear, we’re not talking “Here’s a 240p screenshot from this A$AP video, can you ID it?”. For fit recommendations, taking well composed, well lit photos is essential (here’s a guide for that). If you’re looking for advice on something general like “striped white shirts” include a small imgur album (aka inspo album) of fits you like using the piece or other examples of the piece ( u/ThisIsHirokisAmerica and u/ HalfTheGoldTreasure make superb inspo albums if you need examples. Also, the wiki has troves of them). This is doubly important if you’re asking a more general “help me I have bad style!” question. Including both what you currently wear AND what you’re aspiring to is invaluable. ( u/masasin exemplified this wonderfully)Step 5. Present your Research in a Coherent Mannerfrom the introduction page:Use clear, descriptive language in your title. “I need help” is a terrible title. “Looking for a grey sweatshirt under $60” is better. And EVEN BETTER, search the MFA wiki and index for “sweatshirt”.Step 6. Include ContextThis is much less helpful if you don’t include the aforementioned points, but knowing geographic area, age, and body type are good extra details to include. What defines a BAD question?I’m do not intend to attack or criticize anyone seeking help, but there have been some textbook examples of how NOT to get constructive feedback with the new “No Simple Question” rule.ie.what are some good affordable sites to shop at?1B. What are the best online stores to order clothing1C. what are some good affordable sites to shop at?1D. Any good quality clothing brands that are inexpensiveHow do i buy a leather jacket?”What brands are the best, what should one look out for quality wise etc.?”What’s wrong with these posts?Check the Item Guides at Every Price Point, get a feel for the brands you like & are in your price rangeGuides on how to shopNo BudgetNo researchNo ImagesSee the trend?A few more examples….Need some help with a wardrobe for collegeI’m(19M) a guy with average height and a slim build who’s wardrobe for the past 3 years has consisted of cargo shorts or jeans and solid colored shirts. I’m looking to change this up for college but I’m not sure where to shop/what to buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I’m pretty out of touch with what’s in fashion now. Thanks in advance!Where to begin?Hello. I’ve been lurking on this sub for sometime and I have come to the conclusion that I have no idea where to begin in terms of style.Expanding beyond t-shirt and khakisI’m a high schooler with zero fashion sense. What not-too-crazy garments can I use to expand my wardrobeNot egregious, but lacking some basic information:No budget (step 3)what pieces specifically are op looking for? (pants, Camp collar shirts, A replacement to cargo shorts?, etc) (step 4)A lack of pics (step 5)Post 1 and 3 prodive some context, but more is still desirable. These posts are just going to get the BB & it’s college variant as a response. This isn’t inherently bad, but if OP can provide more detail after reading the wiki and using the BB as a starting point to explore their personal style and ask more detailed questions, more productive advice could be offered (instead of just linking every joe to the sidebar).Last set of questions…WHAT TOOOO TALL !!!!! ??ORIGINAL SITE WITH CHAINS“Where i can buy chain that isn’t from aliexpress but real gilded”Trick question, these are the archetypes of a perfect question. In SumAgain, From the wiki (read the wiki):Generic questions get generic answers, while specific questions receive useful, constructive feedback.I’ll be posting a rather lengthy and detailed thread begging for help after the trial about the my wardrobe and the process involving developing a personal style (if only there was a guide or two, 3, 4 for that). i’ll link it here when it’s posted. I hope this helps those who feel lost on where to get started. I’d like to reiterate that the “bad” questions portion is not created with the malicious intent to poke fun or attack people asking for help, but as an educational example of where certain questions can be elaborated on.

36″ suit fits but a little tight when buttoned. 38″ chest way too big. I’m in between sizes, not sure which size to go for? Sleeves always too long.
I start a new job soon, and it’s a requirement to wear a suit. My current job is usually just trousers, shirt and tie. Only issue here is the sleeves are always longer on me. My arms don’t look out of proportion, but for some reason they’re always longer on me, even if I go for the shortest sleeve length.Bought a new suit for work, I have a 38″ suit already but it’s a tad big for me, the sleeves are long and the chest area is a little big, but I can button it. On sale, I ordered a 36″ suit which again fits, just a little tight round my stomach to button it comfortably, though it can be done. It feels ever so slightly tighter under the back of the arms when I bring them forward. Sleeves are too long.Am I best getting the new suit altered so the sleeves are shorter and seeing if the sides can be elongated slightly? Or would I have been best going for a 38″ and having that brought in?Is it worth having my shirt sleeves all shortened too? I mean I can get away with them, but anything other than slim fit the sleeves look a touch baggy. Slim fit they look fine.Is it important for me to he able to button up my suit?EDIT: I’m 5’8″, slim build. Though I’ve got a gut from lockdown.

Should we be waiting to buy clothes?
Should we be waiting to buy clothes if we anticipate the economy to get worse? I can only imagine that the fashion industry will most likely be one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. If that’s the case, should we hold out for sales on clothes? Personally, I’ve been thinking about buying a custom suit but am considering waiting until more discounts (please let me know if that’s a good idea or not lol)
