A Balancing Act: Clothing as a Means of Expression for Queer People

A Balancing Act: Clothing as a Means of Expression for Queer People
IntroductionThe amount of personal expression clothing represents varies from person to person. At one end, the most important aspects of clothing for the wearer are comfort and utility. On another end, clothing represents who the wearer is on a personal level, presenting their identity and functioning as a means of self-expression. For LGBTQ+ pride month, I have read up on the role clothing plays in queer identifying women. “The Relationship of Gender Expression, Sexual Identity, Distress, Appearance, and Clothing Choices for Queer Women” reveals some interesting implications that may inspire some fashion discussion and self-reflection.What the Literature and Lesbian Women Have to SayClothing is one of the ways that “an individual’s sexual identity and gender identity are performed and continuously negotiated.” Previous research has found that identities are continuous, rather than fixed and constant depending on the social context. Some research suggests that a person may use clothing to explore and model their developing, sometimes conflicting sense of self. According to Kaiser “individuals think through and perform ambivalences about identity, and in particular gender, by experimentation with styles in a ‘non-linear, integrative, [and] elastic’ way.”In the 1970s, lesbian women became more fluid about identifying themselves compared to the butch lesbian distinction of the 1950s. In the 1980s, it became much harder to stand out, since “punk and other boundary-pushing dress made its way into the mainstream.” In a 1990s interview with lesbian and bisexual women in the States, there was no clear consensus on what the lesbian clothing norm was. Today, lesbian women cover the spectrum from both butch and femme ends. “Some butches adopt male clothing, wear close-cropped hair, and approximate a male physique” while some “femme-identifying lesbians dressed sexier, wore makeup, and wore body hugging clothing.” Some lesbian women reported in a 2010 interview that they even consider the usage of butch and femme outdated, and “felt freer to experiment or explore different gender expressions.”Despite the relaxation of clothing norms, some lesbian women still feel the pressure to conform to societal expectations and switch between styles. Queer-identifying people in the study experienced social pressures to conform at work, around family members, and around peers. The modulator for the participants’ conformity was the level of stress they experienced in their environment. “Distress at work was related to their fear of appearing ‘too queer.’” Accompanying the fear was heighted, perpetual self-consciousness, worries about being judged, and concerns about personal safety. When spending time with family members, participants in the study would make an effort to look more feminine or even go out of their way to change outfits before the encounter. To cope with their stress, the answer was most often to wear more feminine attire. The women felt amplified distress during family and formal events because “feminine style was a significant deviation from their everyday presentation.”When around peers or in queer spaces, a majority of the women interviewed wanted to “queer it up” and create a welcoming safe space for others. Some examples of “blatant queer motifs” included a men’s flannel and men’s tailored blazer. Adopting menswear after work helped the women feel confident and at ease, signifying their queer identity with pride in public. Masculine clothing adopters also sought to let others not yet open about their sexual identity feel comfortable and relaxed when around them. Utilizing their styles, some of the women wanted to “make closeted people feel okay” and “inspire people, to be proud of who they are.”Application to the Issue of “Too Feminine” in Male FashionOn r/mfa and other fashion subs, there is a set standard for gender performance and often concerns about overt deviation. Styles such as SLP, which includes tight, skinny jeans, and sleek, heeled jodhpurs and slip-on shoes, such as stichdown slippers and espadrilles have often been labeled as “too feminine.” This seems understandable for beginners to fashion, as many subscribers on r/mfa are looking to improve their daily look for work or formal events. Additionally, it is possible that those in disagreement do not want to express the wrong idea about their sexuality, or have judgement and personal safety concerns like the women in the study. Stress arising from breaking traditional gender norms may also contribute to the controversy around the styles. However in the study, perhaps indicative of the larger queer community, there is no consensus on what being gay looks like. Queer identifying people dress in a range from very traditional to gender rejecting, and cover the space in between. Furthermore exactly what, and the scope of what clothing communicates is unclear. Since there are many countercultures and a limited amount of outlets for rebellion, “certain aspects of dress and style appear to be almost ubiquitous across marginalized groups.” Just as the leather jacket transitioned from a punk symbol (being banned by schools in the 80s) to a fashion staple, perhaps gender-constrained clothing will enter a neutral space in the future. In women’s fashion, it is already common to see a blend of gender styles, such as sporting tights with a tweed, bulky blazer. Maybe in time the hard and fast gender rules of men’s fashion will take inspiration from women’s and queer fashion.Although not the mainstream view, gender-blurred styles are growing in exposure beyond just SLP and sleek shoes. On the fashion stage, Thom Browne, a highly influential designer often credited for “revolutionizing the suit,” takes inspiration from childhood androgyny. His S/S 18 menswear collection featured high heels, skirts and dresses, and a hybrid suit front/bridal gown back piece. Robert Geller, another influential New York designer, has played with tights and long silhouettes in the past and featured a gender contrasting pleated trouser in his S/S 18 collection. Fashion often tickles down from the top, and what is seen on designer runways may leave a lasting mark on ready to wear. One can hope we will see a wider adoption of gender breaking style in the future. Perhaps a softening of gender norms will reduce clothing stress and inspire self confidence not just for LGBTQ+ folks, but everyone.TakeawayIt is important to emphasize fashion does not define you. What you wear is not who you are, but a hint at your complex, constantly developing identity. The meaning of clothing is not fixed, but something moulded by the wearer. That’s not to say you won’t be judged, or face resistance based on what you wear, or how you present. If you don’t want to stand out, that’s OK. But don’t be afraid to try something outside the norm, whether that’s getting derbies or straight-up crossdressing. Find the right balance for who you are and don’t be ashamed of it. As for others, be kind and be open towards them. In the end we all want to look and feel our best, and there are many different ways to achieve that.SourceThe Relationship of Gender Expression, Sexual Identity, Distress, Appearance, and Clothing Choices for Queer Women

Daily Simple Questions – ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- June 22
Welcome to the /r/MaleFashionAdvice Daily Simple Questions thread – Our Daily thread to ask about all things related to male fashion. This thread is for simple style questions that don’t warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Also, theres a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn’t know, you can also use Google to search MFA by using the limiter “site:reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice” after your search topic.Be aware that the more information you add (BUDGET), the more relevant answers you may recieve.Fit checks and “How’d I do” questions are a great use of this thread (although they can also go in the daily Outfit Feedback & Fit Check thread). Other example questions:Could someone take the chest measurement for a small J.Crew oxford? Is there a place with full measurements for Naked & Famous jeans? What slim-fitting green cords do you recommend?Where do I find a military surplus peacoat online? If you’re asking for suggestions for a specific kind of clothing/accessory, state what your budget is.If you’re looking for item identification from a video take a screenshot, do not link the video.Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. The search for a bag to call my own.

The search for a bag to call my own.
Hello! First off I’ll start with – I read the MFA Bag Guide 2.0. It’s super informative but still hasn’t helped me decide on a bag. I’ve been searching for what feels like an eternity and after trying on many bags, checking my budget, rechecking my budget, and browsing countless labels – I’ve realized it’s time to get some opinions from this community.I’m mostly in denim and tshirts – with a cardigan thrown over if its less than warm. I’m looking for a leather backpack – ideally something away from the most classical collegiate style.I really like bags and currently rotate two for work. I’m in the tech field and have to have a 13″ Macbook, charger, and an external hard drive. I might carry some sunglasses, allergy meds, and some snacks, and a light jacket.Herschel HeritagePeak Design Sling 10LFor some more insight into my interests, I also have the:Peak Design Everyday MessengerWotancraft Ranger in Vintage GreyChrome Bravo 2.0Joshu & Vela Small Duffel in NavyI’ve mostly abandoned the Peak Design Everyday Messenger and Wotancraft Ranger because I end up carrying too much and the weight hurts my back over time (slipped a disc twice already). The Chrome is too thin so it just gathers dust. The Joshu & Vela duffle is for quick weekend trips because it doesn’t fit a laptop well due to the shape.A leather backpack seems like the fit for me and I’ve most interested in:Coach Bleecker Backpack-Dark Saddle/BrassWotancraft PhantomMansur Gavriel BackpackMansur Gavriel Technical BackpackLotuff BackpackThere’s probably more that I’ve forgotten but those stood out. The Coach and Wotancraft look great but are a bit bigger than what I’d like to get. If the Coach was a bit smaller then it might just be perfect. The Mansur Gavriels are so clean but I did some reading and supposedly they are lightweight due to liners in their leather and that really doesn’t sound robust. The Lotuff, again, looks a bit big for me. I’m 5’7″, small/medium frame.Any thoughts, comments, suggestions on labels or styles to look at would be great!
